Having Seen the Evidence, I Don't Touch Fizzy Drinks Any More. Frankly They're Evil, Says Leading Biologist

'The research, by Bangor University and published in the European Journal Of Nutrition, reported that soft drinks actually alter metabolism, so that our muscles use sugar for energy instead of burning fat.
It seems that exposure to liquid sugar causes genes in our muscles to change their behaviour, perhaps permanently. Not only do we pile on weight, but our metabolism becomes less efficient and less able to cope with rises in blood sugar, say the researchers. This, in turn, increases the risk of type 2 diabetes.
‘Having seen all the medical evidence, I don’t touch soft drinks now,’ says Dr Hans-Peter Kubis, a biological scientist and expert in exercise nutrition who led the research. 'I think drinks with added sugar are, frankly, evil.’

High Fructose Corn Syrup Associated With Liver Disease

High Fructose Corn Syrup Corn Industry Ignores FDA Warnings of Corn Sugar False Advertising

'Liver scarring is associated with consumption of high fructose corn syrup (HFCS), according to a study at Duke University. The condition, dubbed non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), is present in about 30% of all American adults. Until recently, it was considered rare.

Fatty liver disease, whether alcohol-related or not, is a dangerous condition that indicates an overworked and damaged liver. It can lead to cirrhosis, hepatitis, liver cancer, and liver failure.
Manal Abdelmalek, MD, MPH, Associate Professor of Medicine, Division of Gastroenterology/Hepatology, Duke University Medical Center, led the study’s research team.

They analyzed questionnaires given to 427 adults after liver biopsies showing NAFLD. The questionnaires asked about their consumption of fructose-containing beverages. They found a correlation between severity of disease and amount of HFCS consumption.'

The Difference in How Fructose and Glucose Affect Your Body

Agave_syrup1

'My regular readers know that I consider agave to be a BIG enemy to health and beauty- which is very high in fructose (up to 97% fructose). It truly irks me that sly marketing makes the general public think agave is a “healthy” sweetener, and that it continues to be used in “health” products purported to be better than regular baked or other goods, as well as in many restaurants.

 It is not.

There is a myth that exists that fructose is a “healthy” sugar while glucose is bad stuff. In fact, in recent years, there has been a rise in sweeteners that contain this “healthy” sugar, such as the dreaded agave nectar. I sincerely hope that this information (please help spread it!) makes more people aware of the differences in sugar types, and makes more people know to avoid agave at all costs.'
