'N-acetylcysteine (NAC) is one of the best supplements anyone entering middle age can take. Never heard of it? That’s probably because pharmaceutical companies don’t want you to know about it, since they benefit from selling high priced patent medicines based on NAC. But awareness of NAC is growing, and inexpensive supplements of it are available in health stores and online.
NAC is derived from L-cysteine, a sulfur containing amino acid. Cysteine is produced in the body and is also found in food. The food version is known as cystine, which is actually two cysteine joined together.
