'Rich in antioxidants, blueberries fight free radical damage and keep you younger longer. Why Men Should Be Eating Berries Daily

'Eating strawberries, blueberries, blackcurrants and blackberries can significantly reduce risk of developing Parkinson's disease in men, suggest researchers.

In a study by British and U.S. experts, men who ate the fruits along with other foods rich in flavonoids such as, tea, apples and red wine were found to be 40 per cent less likely to develop the brain disease.

A diet rich in phytochemicals from berries could help improve brain health in several ways, such as improving communication pathways and protecting against oxidative stress.

'It's spring, which means it’s the season for fresh, juicy berries. And that’s good news for your brain.

Herbs for Memory: Maintain Your Brain

dementia 1

'Many people wonder whether mislaying the keys or blanking on the names of acquaintances at cocktail parties telegraph an insidious downslide into dementia. Taken alone, minor episodes of forgetfulness are normal. People with dementia don’t just forget a friend’s name, but much of their shared history. It becomes difficult to interact with other people, think abstractly, solve problems, speak, write, and comprehend printed and spoken words. This chronic, progressive condition can eventually erode the ability to perform simple tasks as basic as getting dressed in the morning.

There are more than 60 types of dementia. The most common type is Alzheimer’s disease (AD), which afflicts more than 35 million people worldwide and 5.5 million Americans. This is followed by vascular dementia (also called multi-infarct dementia) and Parkinson’s disease (a disease that impairs muscle control).'

'Early in 2010, research teams from the U.S. and the UK published positive results from the first-ever controlled clinical trials to test the effects of blueberries on brain function in older adults.
In both trials, people who drank blueberry juice or smoothies showed significant improvements in learning and memory, compared with the control groups.'

A Magical Memory Booster

'Blueberries -- in pies, pancakes and muffins -- take me right back to my childhood summer vacations at the beach. Or, based on the latest research I’ve seen on this super-food, it may actually be that eating all those blueberries sharpened my cognitive abilities, making their deliciousness all the more memorable!

Perhaps the connection is not quite so direct, but I just read a study reporting that blueberries have a profound effect on human brain function.'
