'If you weren’t already worried about the presence of the endocrine-disrupting chemical, (), in the foods you eat, a new study showing that consuming canned soup produces immediate increases in levels of in the body should give you cause for concern.

Numerous studies have linked BPA to health problems ranging from infertility and reproductive cancers to behavioral disorders in children. Canada recently banned BPA, classifying it as a dangerous toxin. The European Union has banned the use of BPA in baby bottles, and is moving towards banning it completely. In the U.S., however, the FDA so far has refused to take action to protect Americans from BPA exposure, yet has admitted that BPA is dangerous.'

'People who ate canned soup for five days straight saw their urinary levels of the chemical bisphenol A spike 1,200 percent compared to those who ate fresh soup, US researchers said on Tuesday.

The randomized study, described as "one of the first to quantify BPA levels in humans after ingestion of canned foods," was done by Harvard University researchers and appears in the Journal of the American Medical Association's November 23 issue.'

'Bisphenol A (BPA) has made mainstream headlines as an estrogen-mimicking health destroyer. With 130 studies tying it to breast cancer, BPA has become an especially popular topic this October — National Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

Of course the negative effects of BPA do not end with cancer, with studies tying  BPA to obesity, hormonal imbalance, and a massive reduction in male fertility rates.

What makes BPA especially concerning to public health is the fact that it affects virtually everyone, is present in 95% of paper money and is in 18 out of 20 of the most popular canned foods. While there can be steps taken to avoid exposure, BPA is most likely present in your bloodstream way beyond ‘safe’ limits.'

'Wish you could just flush all the BPA right out of your body? Too bad -- this hormone-like chemical is in you, right now, and there's not much you can do about it: A new study finds you can completely cut out all foods from BPA-laced containers and STILL have plenty of this junk left over days later. Thank your local chemicals industry lobbyist for that. Researchers recruited five families from the San Francisco Bay Area that regularly ate and drank processed and canned foods, frozen dinners, and meals microwaved in plastic containers -- all top sources of BPA exposure.'

Melissa Breyer Which Plastics to Never Use with Food

'Although the apron-wearing, martini-bearing, housewife-in-heels with her rainbow of Tupperware may be a thing of the past, the quest for a well-organized kitchen persists. To see tidy stacks of food-filled plastic containers in the fridge and freezer is comforting in a primal kind of way. But then comes the procession of warnings about storing and cooking food in plastic, and leaching chemicals, and hormone disruption, and ACK! So here it is: The lowdown on plastic food containers.

Flip over your favorite plastic food storage container and check the recycling code number. If you spy a number 3 or 7, well, those containers should probably go to the craft room or garage to store buttons or screws rather than food. If there is no number listed, contact the manufacturer. (And to be fair to Tupperware, they do manufacture products that are not made of these plastic types.)'

'The federal government has made good on a two-year-old promise to add bisphenol A, a hormone-disrupting chemical linked to some cancers, to the country's list of toxic substances, in spite of industry opposition.

In 2008, Canada became the first country in the world to ban the chemical, an estrogen-mimicking substance also known as BPA, in baby bottles after concluding that the industrial chemical could eventually lead to prostate and breast cancer.

The next step for the government was to designate the chemical as toxic under the Canadian Environmental Protection Act.'

Tests Reveal Poison in Nearly All Campbell's Soup

'The food processing world is reeling right now one day after a shocking new series of tests released by Consumer Reports revealed that many leading brands of canned foods contain Bisphenol A (BPA)—a toxic chemical linked to health risks including reproductive abnormalities, neurological effects, heightened risk of breast and prostate cancers, diabetes, heart disease and other serious health problems.

BPA is used in the lining of cans and the toxin leaches from the lining into the food. According to Consumer Reports just a couple of servings of canned food can exceed scientific limits on daily exposure for children.'
