Why all pharmaceutical research should be made open access

'The decades-old industry practice of suppressing scientific evidence leads Bad Pharma author Ben Goldacre to declare that nothing we know about modern medicine should be assumed to be correct.'

'We'd been talking about Ben Goldacre's excellent new book, Bad Pharma, in which Goldacre documents the problem of "missing data" in pharmaceutical research (he says about half of the clinical trials undertaken by the pharmaceutical industry are never published). The unpublished trials are, of course, the trials that show the pharma companies' new products in unflattering lights – trials that suggest that their drugs don't work very well, or don't work at all, or are actively harmful.
The decades-old industry practice of suppressing scientific evidence (and some independent researchers doing the same) leads Goldacre to declare that nothing we know about modern medicine should be assumed to be correct, and he makes the urgent case for forcing the release of all that pharma dark matter so scientists can re-run the numbers and work out what actually does work.'

Scandal at the FDA: Board Members with Drug Maker Ties Voted to Approve Drug That's Killing Women

'An investigation by the Washington Monthly and the British Medical Journal determined that at least four members of an FDA advisory board which voted to approve a drug used in the birth control pills Yaz and Yasmin had either done work for the drugs' manufacturer or received research funds from the manufacturer. Though the four committee members disclosed their ties to the FDA, the FDA decided that the ties did not matter and did not make the disclosures public. Tragically, the drugs the committee endorsed have been killing the women who take them.'

Dr. Mercola and Barbara Loe Fisher Discuss Merck's Lies About Their Vaccines

Flawed Pharma Study Demonizing Vitamins and Minerals Debunked

'It seems that some people will do just about anything to get ahead, so it shouldn’t come as a surprise when a mostly falsified study is released to put down what is primarily known as a fundamentally healthy and intelligent choice.

Unfortunately, people still will try to spread discord amongst their fellow man in an apparent attempt to get ahead; sacrificing the good of the people is unfortunately a small price to pay for an insurmountably large personal gain, in many cases.

This dishonest act can be seen in one such case of misinformation – a 'study' performed in order to bring the market for multivitamins and other very respectable health supplements down a notch.'

Is This Fraud Too Big Even For 60 Minutes?

By Dr. Mercola

'Exposure and subsequent concern over medical research fraud is on the rise, and for good reason. It's now reached the point where blogs exist solely to cover retractions of published researchi. An episode of 60 Minutes, featured above, also highlights the problem.

In this episode, they reveal the dramatic rise and fall of Dr. Anil Potti, whose cancer research at Duke University was heralded as a groundbreaking game changer. It's a perfect example of how fraud can occur anywhere. Even at the best institutions.

Dr. Potti's work, which entailed matching a patient's tumor to the best chemotherapy drug based on its DNA makeup, was the most exciting cancer breakthrough in recent history, according to many involved.

More than 100 cancer-stricken and desperate patients signed up for Dr. Potti's trial. Unfortunately, two years ago, it became apparent that the method was a failure. Not only that, but as stated in the 60 Minutes segment, Dr. Potti's discovery "may end up being one of the biggest medical research frauds ever; one that deceived dying patients, the best medical journals, and a great University."'

How to Make People Believe Any Anti-Vitamin Scare--- It Just Takes Lots of Pharmaceutical Industry Cash

 http://www.infiniteunknown.net/wp-content/uploads/2010/03/big_pharma_drugs_money.jpg

by Andrew W. Saul
Editor, Orthomolecular Medicine News Service

'(OMNS, Oct 20, 2011) Recent much trumpeted anti-vitamin news is the product of pharmaceutical company payouts. No, this is not one of "those" conspiracy theories. Here's how it's done:

1) Cash to study authors. Many of the authors of a recent negative vitamin E paper (1) have received substantial income from the pharmaceutical industry. The names are available in the last page of the paper (1556) in the "Conflict of Interest" section. You will not see them in the brief summary at the JAMA website. A number of the study authors have received money from pharmaceutical companies, including Merck, Pfizer, Sanofi-Aventis, AstraZeneca, Abbott, GlaxoSmithKline, Janssen, Amgen, Firmagon, and Novartis.'

Science Is Not Really Science Anymore

http://madartlab.com/files/2011/03/science1.jpg

'Those who fuel the conventional medicine engine claim that all the pharmaceutical drug approvals, vaccines, surgical procedures, cancer treatments and all other treatments are based on "science." But is it really science when the results of research must align with corporate interests and profits?'

Medical Research: Torture Data Until It Conforms to Desired Result

Salt shaker sprinkling numbers

'Torturing scientific data has exactly the same result as torturing humans. The victim or data gives up the desired answer, as demonstrated in a reanalysis of a salt study.'
'Mainstream medicine was aghast at a recent salt study showing that lower salt intake is associated with higher death rates. So, they tortured the data to claim it shows the opposite. Apparently, they couldn't find someone independent to take on the task, so a man who has made a career of advocating salt restriction acted as the inquisitor. And, of course, he claimed he had no conflict of interest.

As reported in Reducing Salt Does Not Reduce Heart Disease: Cochrane Study, a recent meta analysis demonstrated less salt is not beneficial. This follows another recent study, Heart Disease Deaths Four Times Higher With Low Salt Intake: JAMA Study, showing that deaths from heart disease are as much as four times likelier with low salt usage.'

Smoking-pill Suicides Overlooked in Missing Reports

'Hundreds of reports of suicides, psychotic reactions and other serious problems tied to the popular stop-smoking drug Chantix were left out of a crucial government safety review because Pfizer Inc., the drug’s manufacturer, submitted years of data through “improper channels.”
Some 150 suicides — more than doubling those previously known — were among 589 delayed reports of severe issues turned up in a new analysis by the non-profit Institute for Safe Medication Practices.'

Science Has Been The Source of Our Retrogress, Not Progress

 http://www.dumbassguide.info/images/sitedisplay/damnedliesandscience.jpg

'Science today puts people at the greatest risks for their health and well-being. We are constantly bombarded with false information from supposed scientists including anti-factoids that mercury is good for us, that cell phone radiation prevents brain disorders, non-organic vegetables grown with pesticides contain more vitamins, or that Ritalin boosts learning and that plutonium boosts human health. This is what science is broadcasting to our world on a daily basis. More often than not, science is a grand deception especially throughout conventional medicine..'

Lies, Damned Lies, and Medical Science

'That question has been central to Ioannidis’s career. He’s what’s known as a meta-researcher, and he’s become one of the world’s foremost experts on the credibility of medical research. He and his team have shown, again and again, and in many different ways, that much of what biomedical researchers conclude in published studies—conclusions that doctors keep in mind when they prescribe antibiotics or blood-pressure medication, or when they advise us to consume more fiber or less meat, or when they recommend surgery for heart disease or back pain—is misleading, exaggerated, and often flat-out wrong. He charges that as much as 90 percent of the published medical information that doctors rely on is flawed. His work has been widely accepted by the medical community; it has been published in the field’s top journals, where it is heavily cited; and he is a big draw at conferences.

Given this exposure, and the fact that his work broadly targets everyone else’s work in medicine, as well as everything that physicians do and all the health advice we get, Ioannidis may be one of the most influential scientists alive. Yet for all his influence, he worries that the field of medical research is so pervasively flawed, and so riddled with conflicts of interest, that it might be chronically resistant to change—or even to publicly admitting that there’s a problem.'

8 Professors demand independent investigation of death in clinical trial

'Why the tragic case of Dna Markingson and the culpability of the University of Minnesota won't go away...

The disturbing circumstances surrounding the enrollment and subsequent suicide of Dan Markingson (2004) after he was given an experimental antipsychotic drug, Seroquel, as a test subject in AstraZeneca's CAFE trial--having been enrolled while he was hospitalized under an involuntary commitment order--are continuing to generate outrage and dismay.

The case against AstraZeneca's corrupt practices is well documented in courts of law and in civil and criminal settlements with the Department of Justice:

Kickbacks to physicians, rigged clinical trials in which company officials "cherry picked" the data to be disclosed while "burying" unfavorable study findings, the company's use of "smoke and mirrors" to obscure Seroquel's failed efficacy, AstraZeneca's failure to warn that Seroquel can cause diabetes and other health problems, and its illegal off-label marketing of Seroquel.  On April 27, 2010, AstraZeneca and the U.S. Dept. of Justice reached a $520 million settlement.'

Wading through the anti-herb coverage

by Dr. Jonathan Wright

Question: 'I'm a big believer in natural medicine, but I can't help but wonder about the reports that come out saying herbal supplements are useless or dangerous. They always seem to have so much clinical research behind them -- how do I know what's true?'

Dr. Wright: 'Not necessarily. I checked in with my friend and regular “Nutrition & Healing” columnist Kerry Bone to get his take on all the negative hype on herbal supplements. Here's what Kerry had to say:'

A Spoonful of Major Medical Journal Makes the Fraud Go Down

'We’re No. 1! U.S.A! U.S.A.! Well, OK, well I’ll admit that maybe this time the chant is a bit inappropriate, because in a moment I’m going to tell you about a case in which, frankly, being No. 1 is NOT something to be proud of.

But first, I have a question for you. If a study gets published in a major medical journal, do you assume that the rigorous standards of that journal mean that it’s always safe to trust the study’s conclusions?'

Drugs linked to brain damage 30 years ago

'Secret documents reveal that government-funded experts were warned nearly 30 years ago that tranquillisers that were later prescribed to millions of people could cause brain damage.

'The Medical Research Council (MRC) agreed in 1982 that there should be large-scale studies to examine the long-term impact of benzodiazepines after research by a leading psychiatrist showed brain shrinkage in some patients similar to the effects of long-term alcohol abuse.

'However, no such work was ever carried out into the effects of drugs such as Valium, Mogadon and Librium – and doctors went on prescribing them to patients for anxiety, stress, insomnia and muscle spasms.'

Dirty medicine

'After 21 years of reporting on the excesses and dangers of modern medicine for my newsletter What Doctors Don’t Tell You, I have become a bit ho-hum when confronted by yet another new revelation about the practices of drug companies.

But I have to tell you that I have been shaken to the core by new evidence that a good percentage of the medical research published in the world’s top medical literature is ghostwritten.
In the pharmaceutical world, ‘ghostwriting’ has a particular meaning.  A drugs company will hire a PR firm — known in pharma-speak as a ‘medical education and communication company  (MECC)’ –  to prepare clinical trials, engage a ghost to write an article with a positive spin on the results, and then enlist a prominent academic to put his name to a paper he’s had nothing to do with in order to give it a patina of respectability.

This ‘study’ will then be submitted (and usually published) in a respectable medical journal.'

Science for Sale: Protect Yourself From Medical Research Deception

By Mark Hyman, M.D.

'A recent study in the Journal of the American Medical Association found over 40 percent of the best designed, peer-reviewed scientific papers published in the world's top medical journals misrepresented the actual findings of the research.(The "spin doctors" writing the papers found a way to show treatments worked, when in fact, they didn't.

Doctors and health care consumers rely on published scientific studies to guide their decisions about which treatments work and which don't. We expect academic medical researchers to determine what needs to be studied, and to objectively report their data. We rely on government regulators to prevent harmful medications from being approved, or to quickly remove harmful medications or treatments from the market.'
