How Real Is The Science Behind Snake Oil?

'Many modern day snake oil salesmen have claimed scientific credentials for their products, a recent case was that of "Lipoban" which was a fat loss supplement sold using false medical and scientific credentials. The inclusion of Doctors names without their knowledge and consent was only the tip of the iceberg. 

The owner of the scam product defrauded 130,000 people and claimed that not only was his product "scientifically designed" but that customers were getting a great price because they would be part of a giant study to once again prove this new "wonderdrug". There was of course no study, no real active ingredient and certainly no science! The man was sentenced to 20 years in prison for a variety of fraud related charges.'

Medical Research: Torture Data Until It Conforms to Desired Result

'Torturing scientific data has exactly the same result as torturing humans. The victim or data gives up the desired answer, as demonstrated in a reanalysis of a salt study.'

'Mainstream medicine was aghast at a recent salt study showing that lower salt intake is associated with higher death rates. So, they tortured the data to claim it shows the opposite. Apparently, they couldn't find someone independent to take on the task, so a man who has made a career of advocating salt restriction acted as the inquisitor. And, of course, he claimed he had no conflict of interest.

As reported in Reducing Salt Does Not Reduce Heart Disease: Cochrane Study, a recent meta analysis demonstrated less salt is not beneficial. This follows another recent study, Heart Disease Deaths Four Times Higher With Low Salt Intake: JAMA Study, showing that deaths from heart disease are as much as four times likelier with low salt usage.'

'Even when faced with proof that their system of treatment was based on severely corrupted data, Duke University continued to sell their treatment system.

Cancer patients turned to Duke University's tumor profiling team for cancer treatment based on claims that they could provide the best possible treatment using their specialized super-duper bioprofiling system.'

Smoking-pill Suicides Overlooked in Missing Reports

'Hundreds of reports of suicides, psychotic reactions and other serious problems tied to the popular stop-smoking drug Chantix were left out of a crucial government safety review because Pfizer Inc., the drug’s manufacturer, submitted years of data through “improper channels.”
Some 150 suicides — more than doubling those previously known — were among 589 delayed reports of severe issues turned up in a new analysis by the non-profit Institute for Safe Medication Practices.'
