Is This Health Food Imposter In Your Pantry?

'Olive oil comes from olives, corn oil comes from corn and canola oil comes from ... canola?


Right... sort of. Canola oil is a genetically modified food made from a hybridized version of the rapeseed plant which is a member of the mustard or cabbage family.


Rapeseed oil is a low quality monunsaturated oil used mostly in industrial applications and in some traditional Japanese, Indian and Chinese cultures. The problem with rapeseed oil is that it's high (30 to 60%) in a toxin called erucic acid, found to be associated with fibrous heart lesions.


In the late 1970's, when polyunsaturated fats from vegetable oils were beginning to be shunned for their association with high rates of cancer and heart disease, monounsaturated fats like olive oil were being relied on more and more as the best source of healthy monounsaturated oil. However, there was not enough olive oil for world demand, not to mention that it was too expensive for producing cheap processed foods.'

Don’t Use These Oils

'When you buy a “cold pressed” cooking oil, do you assume that the seeds were pressed safely at a cool temperature to protect the oil from rancidity, trans fats, and other toxic processing chemicals?
Unfortunately, this couldn’t be further from the truth!


Modern cold pressing heats the oil multiple times to staggering temperatures, rendering most oils rancid.


Additionally, unrefined oils are so delicate that even just one photon of daylight will trigger a chain reaction of free radical damage that creates trans fats and other by-products that experts believe to be even more harmful than trans fats!

Urgent: Throw These Cooking Oils in the Trash

'In the words of Fast Food Nation author Eric Schlosser:

"If they have to put the word 'natural' on a box to convince you, it probably isn't."'

'But this doesn't stop countless processed food manufacturers from boldly labeling their products as 100% natural in the hopes of appealing to health-minded shoppers like you. 

After all, products labeled as "natural" or "sustainable" account for $50 billion in sales annually, or 8 percent of total retail grocery sales, and the numbers are likely growing
When you see a supposedly "natural" product, like ConAgra's Wesson brand vegetable oils claim to be, you would probably assume they contain no genetically modified organisms (GMOs), which by definition are not found in nature. But Wesson oils, specifically the Canola Oil, Vegetable Oil, Corn Oil, and Best Blend, do in fact contain GMOs, prompting a class-action lawsuit over their misleading "100% natural" label claim.'
