Best Ways to Avoid Arsenic in Rice (Besides Not Eating)

Best Ways to Avoid Arsenic in Rice (Besides Not Eating)

'Numerous studies have been published over the past decade documenting arsenic content in rice grown from around the world. Dr. Andrew Meharg, a professor of biogeochemistry at the University of Aberdeen, has led or been part of the research teams in many of these studies.

In 2007, Dr. Meharg led a study that measured arsenic levels among rice grown throughout the U.S. He and his team analyzed 107 samples of rice grown in Louisiana, Mississippi, Texas, Missouri, and Florida, and 27 samples of rice grown in California.

Meharg and his team found that the 107 southern US and central US rice samples averaged .30 micrograms per gram of arsenic (equivalent to 4.4 micrograms per serving), and the California rice samples averaged 0.17 micrograms/gram (ppm) (about 2.5 mcg per serving).'

Fighting for fundamental food rights

Michael Schmidt reports on his participation earlier this summer in the first international conference on food safety and quality of organic food in Prague:

'I am here as a farmer, not as a scientist. The urgently needed scientific debate in Canada has been compromised through very often violent political actions towards farmers and consumers As a result a constructive dialogue about the merits of raw milk for human consumption has been prevented so far.

We have been witnessing this growing anti raw milk enforcement for the last 25 years in North America. Currently we are facing in the US and Canada the enforcement of an “absolute no risk policy” as it relates to raw milk.'

Corporations contaminating agriculture

'While Homeland Security continues to claim that we must not centralize agricultural production because some terrorist might then poison vast quantities of our food supply, the USDA and FDA continue to rig the system in favor of corporate agricultural producers who are doing that very thing.  Maybe they get away with this because what these global corporations are producing can’t really be classified as food, or at least not as food we would recognize as fit for human consumption.

Let me make this perfectly clear: there is no unnamed terrorist in a cave on the other side of the world salivating over the idea of contaminating a corn field in Iowa.  We know who the terrorists are, and they all have the word, “Corporation” attached to their names.  And they aren’t in caves either; many have very nice and spacious offices right inside the USDA and FDA.'

Foodies are the new environmentalists

' “…..Even as traditional environmentalism struggles, another movement is rising in its place, aligning consumers, producers, the media and even politicians. It’s the food movement, and if it continues to grow it may be able to create just the sort of political and social transformation that environmentalists have failed to achieve in recent years.

That would mean not only changing the way Americans eat and the way they farm — away from industrialized, cheap calories and toward more organic, small-scale production, with plenty of fruits and vegetables — but also altering the way we work and relate to one another. To its most ardent adherents, the food movement isn’t just about reform — it’s about revolution.'
