A Marijuana History Lesson

How Weed Can Protect Us From Cancer and Alzheimer's

'For thousands of years cannabis has been used as a medicine for a remarkably broad range of ailments. Opponents of medical marijuana have claimed that nothing works on so many diverse illnesses and that the only relief offered was one of stupor from being stoned.

But in 1988, the first cannabinoid receptor was discovered and since then researchers have learned that there are two types of cannabinoid receptors which are distributed throughout our bodies and that we make chemicals within our bodies—endocannabinoids—that are similar to the cannabinoids made by the cannabis plant. Both plant and human cannabinoids bind to and influence these receptors in order to discourage the rise and progression of numerous disease processes.'

Cannabis Compounds Reduce Multi-Drug Resistant Infections

'Dr. Melamede stated, “Research into use of whole cannabis extracts and multi-cannabinoid compounds has provided the scientific rationale for medical marijuana’s efficacy in treating some of the most troubling diseases mankind now faces, including infectious diseases such as the flu and HIV, autoimmune diseases such as ALS (Lou Gehrig’s Disease), multiple sclerosis, arthritis, and diabetes, neurological conditions such as Alzheimer’s, stroke and brain injury, as well as numerous forms of cancer.'

War Crimes: Suppressing Scientific Study of Cannabis is a Shocking Admission of Ulterior Motives

Cannabis Calendar

'Kush Magazine explains how despite having a patent on the medical use of cannabinoids and maintaining a monopoly on the supply of marijuana for research, the federal government continues to block research that could make marijuana into a medicine.

There has been a virtual ban on scientific research on marijuana since the La Guardia Committee report came out in 1944. In this scientific study, commissioned by New York Mayor Fiorello La Guardia in 1939 to study the effects of marijuana, La Guardia tricked Harry Anslinger, the head of the FBN (Federal Bureau of Narcotics) into supplying marijuana for his team of scientists and physicians to study.

During this 5-year study the researchers disproved many of the government’s accusations against marijuana. Harry Anslinger condemned the results of this study as unscientific, but he knew that he could never again let scientists study marijuana.

This was the beginning of prohibition on the truth.'

The Marijuana Diet: How Pot Enhances My Life

'Flashback to the 1980s. The social and political “correctness” or acceptance of marijuana changed in the post-hippie apathy. We heard years of ”Just say no” from Nancy Reagan. Pot became more underground. You didn’t always know who among your newer friends was using or not, and whether they would like you for choosing to do so.

In my life, there were times I took breaks from smoking pot. I stopped smoking marijuana when my husband and I decided to become parents.

When I did return to having a relationship with Mary Jane, pot was different. Now it was not a lid (an ounce) that got you through the night, and one small toke of some super bud was plenty to change your state.

There were strains that had names and different psychological and physical effects. People began to investigate how marijuana could enhance someone’s life while undergoing acute medical treatment for cancer, AIDS and chronic pain. In other words, there were more uses for marijuana than recreational.'

A Higher Level of Freedom: The Benefit of Cannabis To Health

Cannabis Calendar

"If the words "life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness" don't include the right to experiment with your own consciousness, then the Declaration of Independence isn't worth the hemp it was written on."
- Terence McKenna

'While this article is not focused on the recreational use of cannabis, Terence McKenna's quote speaks directly to a sacred right, increasingly being legislated against in our society, namely, the ability to choose and use substances that grow freely on this Earth as our medicine.

In a day and age where possession of an herb like cannabis is an offense punishable by incarceration, it is important for us to reflect on how we arrived at this dark point in time.

Herbs, after all, were put here by God. If you prefer the word Nature, the point is the same, and it was put best by Bob Marley when he said: "you can't tell God it [cannabis] is illegal."'

Dear Media, Please Ask Obama to Explain His Escalating War on Medical Marijuana

'Monday morning's DEA raid of Oaksterdam University is making major headlines, but there's one detail missing from the coverage: why the f#$k is Obama at War with Medical Marijuana in the first place? Seriously, why is any of this even happening at all?

Under this administration, the idea of raiding state-approved medical marijuana facilities went from being "not a good use of our resources," to being a very popular pastime among federal police and prosecutors'

New Study: Marijuana Smokers Breathe Easy Says The University of Alabama

 http://futurepocket.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/marijuana_3.gif

'The marijuana-only smokers also had 8.2 milliliters more air exhaled after a full inhalation in comparison to non-smokers while tobacco-only smokers had 19 milliliters less. Researchers were surprised to find an increased airflow with increased exposure to marijuana up to a certain level. The results are surprising, because marijuana smoke contains similar noxious ingredients and chemicals as tobacco smoke, which is known to impair lung function.

Until now it has been unclear whether regular marijuana smoking led to the same injuries to the lungs. It was speculated by Dr. Keresz that the way pot is smoked (the common exercise of holding one's breath after inhaling cannabis smoke to increase its heady effects) might have some cause to people to doing well with the lung function test.

Pulmonologist, Dr. Donald Tashkin from the University of California also added that one reason marijuana smoke might not be as harmful as tobacco smoke, despite containing similar noxious ingredients, may be the fact that its active ingredient, THC, has anti-inflammatory effects. “We don’t know for sure,” he said, “but a very reasonable possibility is that THC may actually interfere with the development of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.”'

Cannabis for autism spectrum disorders

image

'On the very last night before my staff put my book, Medical Marijuana, into production for publication, I read an incredible story by Steve Davis about a man and his wife who “cured autism” in their daughter with cannabis. It’s not really incredible; it is exactly what one would expect.

It is important for the entire autism community to wake up and take on the cause of legalization and use of cannabis for autism spectrum disorders. If one studies the pharmacological profile of cannabinoids, it’s easy to conclude that cannabis is the ideal medicine for autistic children and others with neurological conditions.'

Marijuana cannabinoids - oral and transdermal methods

many of the chronic diseases we are facing. From cancer to diabetes,
and from autism to Alzheimer's, medical marijuana helps, and sometimes
dramatically so. Cannabinoid medicine holds a great power to alleviate
human suffering. There are no words to describe how important this
substance is for our race in terms of sanity, compassion and highly
rational medicine.'

'I recently spoke with Dr. William Courtney for an article on juicing raw cannabis to obtain access to CBD, the cannabinoid found useful for reducing inflammation, cancer and nausea.  Some of you had some questions for him.  Since it will [be] awhile until the article comes out, here are the bare bones answers.  The rest should be in the High Times Medical Marijuana magazine soon.  I’ll post a link when it comes out.'

Cannabis plant extracts can effectively fight drug-resistant bacteria.

'Cannabis has long been known to have antibacterial properties and was studied in the 1950s as a treatment for tuberculosis and other diseases. But research into using cannabis as an antibiotic has been limited by poor knowledge of the plant's active ingredients and by the controversy surrounding its use as a recreational drug.

Now Giovanni Appendino of the Piemonte Orientale University, in Italy, and Simon Gibbons of the School of Pharmacy at the University of London, U.K., have revisited the antibiotic power of marijuana by systematically testing different cannabinoids' ability to kill MRSA.'

Medical Marijuana Rules Finalized In Arizona, Washington, DC

'Regulations have been finalized to allow for the sanctioned-use and dispensing of medical cannabis in two more regions of the country: Arizona and in the nation’s capitol, Washington, DC.

In Arizona, representatives from the Arizona Department of Health Services have
approved rules governing the state’s soon-to-be-implemented Arizona Medical Marijuana Program. Voters directed the state to approve regulations regarding the use and distribution of medicinal marijuana in November when they decided in favor of Proposition 203 — making Arizona the fifteenth state since 1996 to legalize the physician-authorized use of cannabis. Program rules, physician certification forms, and answers to frequently asked questions are all available online from the Arizona Department of Health Services here.'
