Doctor Threatens To Notify Child Protective Services Over Marijuana Cancer Treatment

'For refusing chemotherapy treatments for her 3-year-old son Landon, opting instead to treat his cancer with medical marijuana, a Colorado mother says her doctor is now threatening to have her arrested and for Child Protective Services (CPS) to take her son away.

Sierra Riddle’s son Landon was diagnosed with leukemia when he was two, and Riddle says he was given just days to live. “They told us he’s on the brink of death,” Riddle said. “They told us that he wasn’t going to make it. He had only an 8 percent chance to live 24 to 48 hours.”'

Chile: Psychiatrist Leads Crusade To Legalize Marijuana

'A Chilean psychiatrist known as "Dr. Marijuana" has earned notoriety in his South American nation for his crusade to legalize cannabis.

Dr. Milton Flores, 58, describes cannabis as "a tool and a medicine," reports Rafael Romo at CNN. He says he's used cannabis for years to treat patients with conditions including depression and anxiety -- and he's also smoked pot himself, for 44 years.

Flores is considered Chile's main advocate for cannabis legalization. He also favors legalization of other "entheogens" (psychoactive plants), including peyote, ayahuasca and San Pedro cactus. All were used by local shamans and healers well before the arrival of Europeans in the 16th century.'

Israel: Researcher Finds Low Doses of THC Can Halt Brain Damage

'It's been known for some time that the cannabinoids in marijuana are neuroprotectants, that is, they help guard your brain cells from damage. Now, an Israeli researcher has uncovered more evidence that low doses of THC, the chief psychoactive component of marijuana, can protect the brain both before and after injury.

Professor Yosef Sarne of Tel Aviv University's Adelson Center for the Biology of Addictive Diseases at the Sackler Faculty of Medicine said he has discovered that low doses of THC protect the brain from long-term cognitive damage in the wake of injury from hypoxia (oxygen deprivation), seizures, or toxic drugs, reports American Friends of Tel Aviv University.'

Medical Marijuana Goes on Sale in Czech Republic

'Medical marijuana went on sale Tuesday in pharmacies across the Czech Republic for patients suffering from cancer, Parkinson’s disease, multiple sclerosis or psoriasis.

The prescription-only drug formally became legal on Monday, but was virtually unavailable as most pharmacies across the ex-communist European Union state of 10.5 million were closed over the long Easter weekend.

Under the law passed earlier this year, patients will need a prescription from their doctor to obtain medical marijuana from pharmacies.



Patients are not allowed to grow their own medicine, and medical marijuana will not be covered by health insurance.

The Czech Republic will import cannabis for the first year, reportedly from Israel or the Netherlands, until the State Institute for Drug Control starts issuing licences to local growers for a maximum of five years.'

“The Duvals’ case is another tragedy from President Obama’s war on medical marijuana,” said Steph Sherer, Executive Director of Americans for Safe Access (ASA), a leading medical marijuana advocacy group. “This type of enforcement is unnecessary and far from the public health approach that medical marijuana patients deserve.” A press release from ASA cites the fact that accused medical marijuana caregivers have “no chance of defending themselves against federal law.”

The ASA is particularly troubled by this latest round of prosecutions.
