Cinnamon beats Alzheimers

'The miracle spice cinnamon is the scented bark of a tropical evergreen tree, native to India and Sri Lanka. Cinnamon comes from an evergreen tree in Southeast Asia and is cultivated widely in Vietnam, China, Burma, and Laos for its bark and the oil processed from the bark. Once upon a time in ancient Rome, cinnamon was worth more than silver.

Cinnamon is harvested from the inner bark of the tree branches after scraping off the corky outer layer and then drying the bark. As it dries, the bark curls up into quills which are then cut into sticks to be ground into the spice form. Full of calcium and fiber, cinnamon is one of the oldest known spices, it is mentioned in the Bible and was used in ancient Egypt as medicine, beverage flavoring and an embalming agent.'

Spicing Up Your Hormones Without Hormone Replacement

Spicing Up Your Hormones Without Replacing Them

'One of the insurmountable problems with hormone replacement therapy is that when you replace a hormone you risk feeding the underlying glandular deficiency.

In the exuberance associated with the idea of overcoming age-associated declines in sexual, cognitive, skeletal, cardiovascular, etc. function, with both synthetic and bioidentical hormones, the hormone replacement advocates have often neglected to educate their patients to several unintended, adverse effects of hormone replacement therapy (HRT): 1) the endocrine system has a negative feedback loop which guarantees that with time the body's ability to produce adequate quantities of the very hormones being targeted for replacement will decline, resulting in the development of biological dependency on an external source of hormones -- not exactly a picture of empowerment.'

Aggarwal notes that in his native India, where spices tend to be used by the handful, incidence of diet-related diseases like heart disease and cancer have long been low. But when Indians move away and adopt more Westernized eating patterns, their rates of those diseases rise.'

'Boasting big flavor and health benefits, spices and herbs are similar, but have some small differences. In general, spices are considered to be the aromatic dried seeds, fruit, roots, or bark, while herbs tend to be the leaves of herbaceous plants. Also, spices usually have a stronger flavor punch than the subtler flavor of herbs.

Ancient cultures have valued both herbs and spices for their culinary and medicinal properties since ancient times. Today, plenty of studies have found that compounds in everyday herbs and spices can increase mental function and physical vitality.'

5 Food-Medicines That Could Quite Possibly Save Your Life

Food Medicines That Could Quite Possibly Save Your Life
'Some of the most powerful medicines on the planet are masquerading around as foods and spices. While they do not lend themselves to being patented, nor will multi-billion dollar human clinical trials ever be funded to prove them efficacious, they have been used since time immemorial to both nourish our bodies, and to prevent and treat disease.

So valued were these in ancient times that they were worth their weight in gold, and entire civilizations either rose to great power or collapsed as a result of their relationship to them.

What is even more amazing is that many of these "plant allies" are found growing in our backyards, and often sitting there in our refrigerators and spice racks, neglected and under appreciated.  In fact, many of us use these daily unaware that this is why we don't get sick as often as those who do not incorporate them into their diet. Let's look at a few examples….'

How to make your own curry powder

'This curry mix is actually a combination of recipes from Mark Bittman’s ‘How to Cook Everything Vegetarian,’ which is an excellent resource on the basics of vegetarian cooking. Basically, I took the recipe for ‘hot curry mix’ and added a few ingredients from the ‘fragrant curry mix,’ because I love what the warm spices add to this. I also added a bit more cumin, because it seemed like a good idea.

I know it seems like you have to buy a lot of random spices to make this happen, but it will be worth it.'
