B Vitamins Slow Alzheimer's and Grey Matter Loss

B Vitamins Slow Alzheimer's and Grey Matter Loss

'Researchers from the University of Oxford have determined that B vitamin supplementation can slow and possibly reverse the progression of Alzheimer's symptoms along with cognitive impairment.

The researchers – from Oxford's Nuffield Department of Clinical Neurosciences - conducted a clinical trial with 156 elderly patients who had mild cognitive impairment and a high risk of dementia and Alzheimer's disease.

The researchers randomized the patients and for two years, gave one group a daily supplement with 800 micrograms of folic acid, 20 milligrams of vitamin B6, and 500 micrograms of vitamin B12. They gave a placebo supplement to the control group.'

Vitamin B Deficiency: Why Vitamin Pills Are Not Enough

Vitamin B Deficiency: Why Vitamin Pills Are Not Enough

'Many years ago, when I was writing my thesis, I realized that there is a major flaw in the entire concept of taking vitamins to improve one's health. I called it the missing link in vitamin therapy, and the essential idea is that real foods contain a host of nutrients that vitamin pills do not.

And we need these other nutrients — often more than the vitamin itself — for healing, prevention and cellular function. In real food, vitamins exist within a complex of interwove, interactive and interdependent nutrients. Vitamins and multivitamins, on the other hand, do not contain this complex and therefore do not act as natural nutrition inside the body.'

'The Nicotinamide form of vitamin B3 is one of the most potent of blood B vitamins, absorbing four times more into the blood than any other vitamin. Cedars-Sinai researchers have discovered that the vitamin has the potential to provide a powerful weapon to fight superbugs and antibiotic-resistant staph infections that health experts see as a threat to public health.'

An Avocado a Day…

Flickr – Avocado – threelayercake

'If you ask your friends if an avocado is a fruit or vegetable they may not know, but they’ll probably be able to tell you that avocados are high in fat. This fact about the mild-flavored green fruit (yes, avocados are fruits, or more specifically large berries) has given avocados a bad rap as a contributor to obesity, but is this really the case?

Avocados are a very healthy and nutritious food. They are rich in 13 vitamins (A, C, D, E, K, E and 8 types of B vitamins including B-6, B-12 and folate), and are packed full of other nutrients such as potassium, lutein, monosaturated fats and antioxidants. And since avocados can be eaten raw, baked, made into delicious dips and soups, or even blended into your morning green smoothie, avocados really are a tasty and versatile way to boost your health.'

The Folic Acid Fallacy: How Your Multi-vitamin Might be Killing You

'Just as counterfeit Rolex watches are sold to intoxicated teenagers on the streets of Mexico, the drug industry pushes counterfeits of Mother Nature to consumers dizzy with marketing spin. This is the best analogy for the “folic acid fallacy.” Folic acid is a cheap counterfeit isolate of the naturally occurring “folate.”

The term folate (not folic acid) encompasses a slew of naturally occurring chemical cousins – chemists call them isomers – that have a wide range of positive roles in the body. Without full-spectrum natural folate, our body becomes a breeding ground for Alzheimer’s disease, coronary heart disease, osteoporosis, neural tube defects, poor cognitive performance, depression, hearing loss and many types of cancer.'

B vitamins found to halve brain shrinkage in old

(Reuters) - 'Daily tablets of large doses of B vitamins can halve the rate of brain shrinkage in elderly people with memory problems and may slow their progression toward dementia, data from a British trial showed on Wednesday,

Scientists from Oxford University said their two-year clinical trial was the largest to date into the effect of B vitamins on so-called "mild cognitive impairment" -- a major risk factor for Alzheimer's disease and other forms of dementia.'
