'Between adding peanut butter in smoothies, spreading it on veggies and apples, and of course, baking with it, I can go through a lot of peanut butter in a month. Oh, and I like to eat it with a spoon sometimes too! I recently started to make my own peanut butter to save a bit of money. When you buy your own peanuts and make it at home, it works out to being a bit less costly than store-bought. Plus, it takes less than 10 minutes to whip up. I also enjoy making my own almond butter too. For my other nut butter recipes, see my nut butter category.'

Others are made using roasted nuts which removes most of the nutritional value, and lastly, most don't use organic sources which means that nuts may be pasteurized or grown in chemical environments. Here's an excellent raw organic almond butter that is healthy, delicious, cost-effective and rectifies all the short-comings of conventiona nut butters.

Selenium – The missing link for treating hypothyroidism?

 http://bitchingkitchen.files.wordpress.com/2011/11/brazil_nuts.jpg

'A healthy thyroid is a critical component of one’s overall health, and many people are struggling with thyroid disorders such as hypothyroidism, specifically Hashimoto’s autoimmune thyroiditis. In this autoimmune condition, the immune system attacks the thyroid gland, with the resulting inflammation leading to an underactive thyroid gland or hypothyroidism.

Hashimoto’s disease is the most common form of hypothyroidism and was the first condition ever to be classified as an autoimmune disease.

I’ve written extensively about thyroid health, focusing on a multitude of environmental factors that may effect thyroid function, including gluten, gut health, stress, excess iodine, and vitamin D deficiency. I’ve also discussed why dietary changes are always the first step in treating Hashimoto’s, and why replacement thyroid hormone is often necessary for a successful outcome.'

Quick & Healthy Recipes: Almond “Milk”

'Although almond milk is becoming widely available in supermarkets across the country (especially now that Silk sells its own variety), nothing beats the taste of a homemade batch.

Almond milk recipes have been around for decades and can be found in a variety of books and websites.  By no means is this an original concept of mine.

That said, the version below is the one I have found to be ideal for me in terms of taste and texture after much experimentation.'

Make Sure Your Almonds Are Raw and Organic, Otherwise They Have No Nutritional Value

 http://www.medexpressrx.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/almonds-1.jpg

'They look just like any other nut, but nutritionists say almonds are packed with heart-healthy nutrients, especially monounsaturated fat, plant protein and dietary fiber. However, they must be consumed in their raw, organic form to have any nutritional value.

California is the only U.S. state that commercially produces almonds and actually produces 80% of the world's supply. All almonds produced in California, destined for the U.S., Canada, and Mexico are required (mandatory) to be pasteurized. Organic almonds are now required to be pasteurized, even though there has been absolutely noincident of salmonella poisoning among organic almonds. The pasteurized almonds will not be required to be labeled as "pasteurized" and may only be labeled "raw", effectively misleading consumers!'

Brazil Nuts are Best Source of Selenium

 http://www.iibc.com/wp-content/uploads//2010/04/041610_1840_BrazilNuts1.jpg

'Rich, creamy Brazil nuts are the best source of selenium. A recent study at the University of Otago in New Zealand found that eating just two Brazil nuts a day is as effective in increasing selenium and boosting glutathione as taking a selenium supplement. And eating Brazil nuts brings many other benefits not found in selenium supplements.'

Why Nuts Are So Healthy!

How to Make a Nut Milk - Almond Milk

'I’m a huge fan of nut milks especially because they’re so much healthier than [pasteurized] dairy milk and taste amazing! I created a quick, simple video with my friend Lisa Paris explaining just how easy it is to make your own almond nut milk. . Almonds are an incredible food! They were one of the first cultivated nuts on earth and are so rich with nutrients. Its important to mention that you need to be buying ‘raw’ organic almonds to get them most nutrients from them.

However, many don’t know that a law was passed a few years ago requiring all almonds to be pasteurized. The worst part is they can still legally be labeled as raw! If you didn’t know this, make sure to check out an article I wrote all about it here: Raw Almonds Are Illegal The good news is there are 2 loopholes that still allow you to purchase truly raw almonds, so make sure to check that article out.' . Okay, back to our amazing Almond Nut Milk!

Here’s what you’ll need to make this (Almond Milk):

Smart Fuel: Macadamia Oil

http://www.dlife.com/diabetes/export/pics/dLife_Images/healthy_swaps/Macadamia_Nuts.jpg

'What compare to the sweet, buttery mac nut’s tender embrace? As far as nuts, seeds, and pseudo-nuts go, its fatty acid profile is unparalleled. Throw a handful into a bowl of Greek yogurt, along with blueberries, blackberries, and strawberries (or any berry, really), and you’ve got yourself a rich, masterful dessert with minimal linoleic acid. And it’s got good amounts of magnesium, manganese, thiamine, copper, and iron. Pack a baggy full and you’ve got yourself the perfect trail food for day long hikes. Suffice it to say, they’re my go-to snack when I’m feeling a bit peckish throughout the day.'

Time to Go Nuts

'You may have noticed that nuts have been recently featured in countless news articles touting them as today’s health promoters. Unassuming staples of native diets for centuries, nuts are at last standing tall as the spotlight shines new information about their healthful attributes. Study after study during last fifteen years has turned up exciting and sometimes even unexpected beneficial results when nuts were included in the diet.

Studies have revealed that it only takes a handful of nuts a day for the mostly monounsaturated fats to begin lowering total cholesterol and especially the LDL cholesterol, often referred to as bad cholesterol. That handful of nuts, about one and one-half ounces, lowers the risk of heart attack and diabetes when nuts serve as the primary source of fat in the diet.'
