Mainstream media launches another phony war against organic

'The mainstream media is invoking déjà vu with their latest laughable attempt to frame yet another study that actually highlighted the benefits of organic into a hysterical anti-organic news frenzy. This time, however, some publications are actually publishing the truth on the matter. Why? Because last time that the mainstream media conglomerate decided to smear the last organic foods study's findings and proclaim how great pesticides and GMOs are for you and your family, it ended in a major apology by theNew York Times.'

Why Whole Foods Are More Than The Sum of Their Parts

Why Whole Foods Are More Than The Sum of Their Parts

'What makes an apple so good for us? Is it the vitamin C? Vitamin K or B6? Is it the soluble fiber or the insoluble fiber? Is it the potassium or the phytosterols?

Or is it the apple? What a concept.

Western science is obsessed with deconstructing food, researching and analyzing its component parts, isolating the "active ingredients," repackaging them in pills or powders and prescribing them in daily doses. But according to Annemarie Colbin, Ph.D., author of Food and Healing, this chemistry-based theory of nutrition is completely upside down.'

Is it Possible to Eat Healthy on a Food Stamp Budget?

By Dr. Mercola

'In recent years, as the pace of the US economic recovery has slowed, the number of Americans enrolled in the food stamp program has skyrocketed, now reaching an all-time high of roughly 46 million Americans.

With so many people in need of assistance to purchase food for their families, the question of whether or not it is possible to truly eat healthy on a food-stamp budget has become all the more pressing.

Husband and wife filmmakers Yoav and Shira Potash tackled this inquiry with both their cameras and their stomachs in the acclaimed documentary film Food Stamped.'

Cargill and Others Behind anti-Organic 'Stanford Study'

'When entire news cycles are dominated by headlines built on a single university study, with editorials attempting to hammer in big-agri talking points, a lobbying effort is clearly afoot.

Two news cycles have already been dedicated to trashing organic food. Organic food is free of pesticides and genetic manipulation, both of which are proven to cause learning disabilities, decreased IQ, sterility, and a myriad of other health problems including a wide variety of cancers.'

Thinking Outside the Processed Foods Box—Health and Safety Advantages of Organic Food

'I have enjoyed a virtually exclusive organic diet for the past 30 years. But I was deeply unsettled by a September 4 New York Times article and a similar Associated Press story casting doubt on the value of an organic diet.

In terms of the extra cost and value of eating organically, I have always subscribed to the adage "pay now or pay later." While my personal experience does not provide much in terms of a scientifically legitimate sample size, in the last 30 years, after suffering from pesticide poisoning prompted my shift to an organic diet, I have exceeded my insurance deductible only once, due to an orthopedic injury. And my doctor keeps telling me how remarkable it is that I, at age 57, have no chronic health problems and take no pharmaceuticals.'

Cilantro: A Powerhouse of Minerals and Vitamins

'Cilantro, also known as coriander, Chinese parsley or dhania, contains an abundance of antioxidants, which can delay or prevent the spoilage of food seasoned with this spice. It also is an excellent source of vital vitamins and minerals.

Chemicals derived from cilantro have antibacterial activity against Salmonella choleraesuis, and this activity was found to be caused in part by these chemicals acting as nonionic surfactants.

Cilantro has also been documented as a traditional treatment for diabetes. A study on mice found coriander extract had both insulin-releasing and insulin-like activity.'

'We have been hearing a lot about genetically modified food lately. Stories are coming out about their environmental impacts and the role they play in a war waged on our health and the health of our children.

We have also been hearing a lot of other stories about our food – antibiotics and growth hormones in meat or radiation and chemicals in fish from the sea.

From the news sources to which I subscribe, the truth is clear and simple: we need to consume nutritious, whole foods that are grown organically. Our future and our family is worth it.

It is a choice between weakness and strength for our bodies and our minds, an issue of black vs. white. We do not get the newspaper at my house, but I have been known to snag the occasional grocery store flyer from the recycling and have a look. The other day something was in there that made me think.'

Helping the Bloated Gut

Helping the Bloated Gut

Health and Disease Begin in the Gut – Part Two: A Practical Approach

'In Part One of Health and Disease Begin in the Gut we explored the central function of the small intestinal duodenum:

how inflammation hampers duodenal controls and functions
how an inflamed duodenum plays a significant role in a wide array of disorders from how we can recognize an inflamed gut.

Once we have recognized inflammation and its effects, it is time to identify causes and solutions to any particular set of health challenges. There is no good-for-all solution to gut inflammation and its many secondary disorders. When it comes to true healing we all require an individualized, carefully planned approach.'

'Japanese pastas have unique characteristics and health promoting properties that are not found in traditional Western-style pasta. For example, buckwheat, the main ingredient of soba, is a primitive grain that is rarely eaten in the United States. However, buckwheat is the best, and in some cases the only, source of some bio-compounds that are vital to the healthy functioning of cells and enzymes.

This is why adding soba, particularly 100% buckwheat soba, to your diet can have a positive effect on your health.'

Caveat Emptor:Organic Food Industry Bought Up by Corporations Like Coca-Cola

'You may be wondering why some supposedly ‘healthy’ and ‘environmentally conscious’ companies deceive unknowing consumers into purchasing products with hidden additives and fillers. Perhaps one of the main reasons is that a large number of these pseudo-organic brands are owned by their very unhealthy ‘competitors’, such as Coca-Cola and General Mills. In fact, some of your favorite “All Natural” and organic companies may be owned by a corporate giant.'

Going Organic on a Shoestring Budget

http://www.boston.com/ae/theater_arts/exhibitionist/us-money-photo.jpg

'Recently, someone wrote to me at Farm Wars and asked the following question: “How do you go organic on a shoestring budget when you both work?”

This is a very good question, and one that needs to be addressed. Is there some way for we the people who live on a fixed income that is well below the national poverty line to eat healthy, or is eating healthy only for the rich?'

David Suzuki: Small farms may be better for food security and biodiversity

David Suzuki.

'We often assume the only way to feed the world’s rapidly growing human population is with large-scale industrial agriculture. Many would argue that genetically altering food crops is also necessary to produce large enough quantities on smaller areas to feed the world’s people.

But recent scientific research is challenging those assumptions. Our global approaches to agriculture are critical. To begin, close to one billion people are malnourished and many more are finding it difficult to feed their families as food prices increase. But is large-scale industrial farming the answer?'

The Soy and Other 'Natural' Food Products in Your Cabinet May Contain a Dangerous Neurotoxin

http://www.cheese-burger.net/wp-content/uploads/gas-can1.jpg
'Popular protein bars like Clif, Mojo, Balance, and Luna all contain hexane-processed soy, according to the report, as do Boca veggie burgers, Gardenburger products, Trader Joe's veggie burgers, and many more.'

'It's ironic that many of the scariest, non-certified organic foods are labeled "natural" -- a term that could not mean less, or mislead more. Like "home-style" or "old-fashioned," the label "natural" can mean whatever the labeler wants it to mean. You could put "natural" on a lab-grade jar of MSG crystals, or on a packet of 10-year-old Twinkies, without violating any law. And all too often it's the companies playing the "natural" card that are doing the most unnatural things to your food.'
