How to Make Pumpkin Wine

http://www.commonsensehome.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/12/how-to-make-pumpkin-wine.jpg

'Did you know you can make wine out of just about any fruit or vegetable, even onions? I haven’t tried that one yet, but I did have more than enough pumpkins this season, so I decided to try my hand at pumpkin wine. Note: it’s entirely possible that I keep making wine even though I am not a big wine drinker just because I love the rich, yeasty smell in my kitchen as it ferments.'

Savory Sweet Potato Fries W/Chipotle & Cilantro Mayo

When your fries are done, remove them from the oven and serve hot with a healthy dollop of dip. Enjoy!

'Every year during the standard holiday dinner, I turn my nose up at sweet potatoes. I’m sorry, but smothering them in shiny white goo and turning them into mush just doesn’t do it for me.
But — and this is a big but — I love sweet potatoes!

How can I possibly love them, when I always reject them?

Well, I don’t always reject them. In fact, I eat them every Thursday night at my favorite local restaurant.

I’m addicted to them.

Sweet potato fries call my name, particularly when coupled with this scrumptious dip — a spicy, tangy mayonnaise made from chipotle peppers, fresh cilantro, and homemade enzyme-rich mayo.
For the sweet fries, you’ll need:'

Easy Sourdough Crepes with Whipped Coconut Cream

sourdough crepes

'These sourdough crepes are great for discarded starter. You know when you’re feeding your sourdough starter to proof it for baking and you have to throw some of the old starter out to feed it again?

Well, this is a good use for the starter that you would normally throw away. If you don’t have sourdough starter yet, get on board! You can get sourdough starters here. Once you get them going you can use them for all kinds of things like bread, muffins, pancakes, etc.

The fact that the dough is “soured” reduces the phytic acid–an enzyme inhibitor present in grains that blocks the absorption of key vitamins and minerals.'

10 Easy Steps to Turn Any Recipe Into a Real Food Recipe

'I had an epiphany the other day.

Ever since I started eating real food, I’ve stayed far away from where my meal inspiration used to come from (if not picked up straight from the freezer aisle) — recipes from magazines, websites, and TV shows with eye-rollingly-typical “healthy” fare. Ingredients like, “Bouillon cubes,”  and “Heart-healthy canola oil,” and “Fat-free sour cream” Barf. Barf. Barf.

So just the other day, when I really needed to figure out what to do with a pack of grass-fed short ribs I had bought, I decided I’d go ahead and check out one of my old standard recipe sites, at least to get some ideas.

But what I discovered, was that even though most of the recipes called for some barfy ingredients, I knew just what I needed to replace them with! And the more I thought about it, the more I realized how easy this really is.'

How to make your own nut milk (or fresh green juice) using water, nuts, a blender and a nut milk bag

http://naturesnurtureblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/06/homemade-almond-milk.jpg

'Yesterday, I shared with you the super easy tutorial for making almond butter (and other nut butters), and as I expected, it was a huge hit! If you haven’t checked it out yet, you can view it here.

Today, we’re making almond milk, and I think it’s just as awesome, if not more so! Mr. Nurture and I only recently started getting into the world of almond milk, to tell you the truth. Not because of any dairy allergies or anything like that. We were just interested in venturing out and trying alternatives to cow’s milk.'

Greek Rice Stuffed Peppers

'When I serve these at dinner parties they’re a huge hit!

When I traveled in Greece I sampled several vegan versions of stuffed vegetables. Greek rice stuffed peppers was one of my favorites. I switched out the traditional Arborio rice for brown rice to make this a whole grain version. If you like the combination of lemon and dill, you’re going to love these.'

Roasted beet salad with green apple, feta and pistachios [Vegetarian]

'My favorite salads are those that have a variety of flavor and texture, so that every bite is different from the one before. This salad has all that. From the variety of lettuce to the simple and savory dressing that is poured over the mix of roasted beets, apples, feta and nuts, this salad is an amazing meal for lunch or dinner.

You can make the dressing and roast the beets ahead of time to be able to quickly toss this salad together for a quick meal during the week. If you're really in a pinch for time, you can skip roasting your own beets and use canned beets instead.'

10-layer roasted vegetable salad [Vegetarian]

roasted vegetable salad photo

'Every single bite of this salad is a new and wonderful flavor combination, depending on what lands on your fork. The delightful mix of roasted vegetables, beans, crispy lettuce, crunchy toasted almonds, smooth avocado and tangy feta cheese -- all combined with a dressing of garlic, honey and spices -- is an incredibly tasty and healthy feast.

There are a few steps to making this salad, but it comes together quickly. Speed it up by making the dressing while the vegetables are roasting. Layer the ingredients in a large bowl, and toss just before serving to keep it looking fresh and beautifully colorful. During summer, you can put the vegetables on the grill instead of roasting them, adding a wonderfully smoky flavor.'

Healthy Baked Beans Recipe

'To make the perfect dish of baked beans, it's best to use navy beans, one of nature's best sources of healthy protein and folate. Navy beans are also rich in a number of minerals, including iron, magnesium, copper, and manganese.

You could just open up a can of baked beans by Heinz or others, but if you give this recipe a try, I think you'll notice a huge difference in savoriness. And you can also feel good about avoiding any bisphenol A that is sometimes found in can linings.'

Perfect roasted potatoes

'There are few things in life that are perfect. This is something I keep trying to remind myself, but my inner Martha Stewart often battles with the realities of life. A little chaos never threw me for a loop, but lately reigning control over some variables in my life offers incredible solace. Being able to make what I consider to be the perfect roasted potato is one of those variables.'

Avocado and chickpea salad sandwiches

Jaymi's Notes:

'I live where avocado is a staple food. There is a reason why "California style" means "add some avocado, thanks." Both my dad and aunt have avocado trees in their back yards, and my dad's is a variety that will produce fruit late in the fall and early winter for avocados practically year-round. So I'm always looking for new things to do with the trusty old avocado.

There are two reasons I love this recipe. First, it is because the chickpeas add bulk without an overpowering flavor, which means for those readers living in locations where an avocado is $4, one avocado goes a loooooong way. This recipe makes enough for several sandwiches.'

Vegetarian Eggplant Lasagna

Editor's Note: Make sure all of your ingredients are organic. Organic, pastured, raw milk cheese is delicious and very healthy. Checkout the Homemade Ricotta cheese recipe(below) and substitute pastured raw, organic milk and raw cream.
If you decide to pair your vegetarian lasagna with a wine, consider this advice from NPR: 'Rich dishes such as vegetarian casserole, eggplant parmigiana, scalloped potatoes or spinach lasagna pair best with full-flavored whites or medium-bodied reds, such as chardonnay and merlot, which tend to be more supple and less tannic than cabernet and shiraz.'
Buen Provecho!
'I was looking for a way to use the beautiful little eggplants I picked recently. The end of the growing season approaches and the glut of vegetables begs to be used up or frozen, or canned. I’ve got plenty of produce on my hands to use in main dishes.
This one is pretty simple – I’m making vegetable lasagna and substituting eggplant slices for the noodles. I am jazzing it up by using homemade ricotta - it’s simple, and rich.  The only things store bought for this dish are the mozzarella and olive oil. I love a self sufficient dinner!
Use whatever veggies you have on hand. Peppers, onions, spinach, carrots, zucchini, mushrooms are all good candidates. Got broccoli? Use it?'
